about sally.

juno and sally.

juno and sally.

when I was young and it was my turn to mow the front lawn, I never bagged up the cut grass as instructed. instead, i arranged it into 3-inch-wide lines (my "walls") until I had created a near full-scale floor plan. I'd walk those grass-lined halls, continuously rearranging the rooms until each space worked just right.

an indication of what was to come, i suppose.

today when I enter a building, my initial response is to absorb the original intent of the design. my mind is then flooded with images and ideas of how to change and enrich the space for the owner or tenant. defining the users needs and desires drives the creative process. once i understand the objectives, i'm able to generate ideas, remove obstacles and make selections.

the relationship we build is what brings soul into the process.

my personal aesthetic is ever-present. nature plays an influential role here. i often happen upon my best ideas when gliding through open-water lakes or rambling along mountain trails. but my aesthetic is always filtered through an obligation to the intent of the space and the desires of the user.

i still go down those "grass-lined halls" until the space is just right.
